You’ll never believe what happened on my way to school…

For those of you who are not familiar with the MadPax brand, know that it began with one pack, one spiky idea, that would propel MadPax to this date, the 10th of June. Welcome to the Thunderdome as they say. Are you ready to rumble?

Where it all began

My name is Tina Huber and I am the mad scientist behind this crazy brand. My son was the first person to rock what is now fondly known as the Spiketus Rex backpack. We literally sell and design for kids of ALL ages. Who would have thought 9 years ago that I would be selling spiky backpacks into stores around the world…what a ride.

MadPack Backpack FortuneIt was wrong in all the right ways from the beginning. Is it a dinosaur? Is it Koopa from Mario Brothers? What was this over-the-top, never before seen, funktabulous bag? Well I have always seen MadPax as a way to funk up your trunk, to scream from the rooftops, “THIS IS ME!” I think our crazy creations say that you have your own way of seeing the world and that perspective is FUN.

The first prototype was this unbelievable Jurrasic Park brown. It had a texture to it. It looked like a dinosaur and I KNEW kids would go nuts at the sight of it! The fabric was going to be a sure-fit hit, but we needed one thing to confirm the design was X marks the spot, that were right. We needed some feedback. We needed kids to see it! What would they say? What would the teachers say? Would we get busted because it had spikes on it and the school would deem it inappropriate? We were about to find out…And boy did we ever.

A killer backpack or a bad idea?

Hayden Backpack Protopack - BeginningsMy fabulous daughter was only 8 years old at the time and literally wanted nothing to do with it. Too weird she thought. I asked my son to wear it to school for the first time. He said that he would. I remember telling Holden, my wickedly amazing child, to get some ‘recon.” Quickly he replied, “Mom, I’m in second grade. “What does recon mean?” I said to him, with unbridled excitement, “Just remember what people say so we can talk about it after school..” And off he went. Tick tock, tick tock….time for pick up. As the door flew open, he exclaimed right out of the chute, “I felt like a rock star! Everyone wants one!” It was music to my ears! We were onto something. I could feel it in my bones…

I had been in the retail industry prior to MadPax. I knew right where to go and that was the ABC Kids Expo in Las Vegas. This, my friends, is where the magic happens. People from all over the world, showcasing their amazing ideas, set to pounce on the social and retail scene. It is where you go when you have something you want to sell to and for children; you name it, chances are it got it’s start at a trade show. It’s where buyers from the local boutiques you frequent to the bigger box stores and online super houses go for what is new and now. It is the Super Bowl and we were there. We were rocking our prototypes around the show and literally could not get 10 feet without someone inquiring where our booth was. We did not, in fact, have a booth. We were flaming the fire… if it’s going to pop, then it’s going to whiz, bang, pop on my watch! And there it was. And that as they say, is how the cookie crumbles… So, speaking of cookies…

Vegas baby, 10’s and good fortune

There is no mystery. It was October 10th, 2010, 10.10.10 and I remember watching the Today Show that morning in Las Vegas. The hosts of the show were discussing that a date like 10.10.10 would never come this way again. It was three, count them three perfect 10’s in a row! Perfection! Or in this case, packfection. The idea was to not put off your dreams; that whatever you were set to create should start that day which is why 10.10.10 is MadPax birthday! The 9 years that follow did so with a BANG.

Silly enough, I read so in a fortune cookie. I literally cracked open a fortune cookie with my family and it said that “a crazy invention would lead to your wild success.” Are you even kidding me? You can’t even write something like that unless it was a movie and I think MadPax is in it’s opening credits. There is so much left to reveal, to learn and to discover…

I hope you too enjoy the ride. Now fasten your seatbelt, it’s about to go next level around here.

Until then, expect packarazzi.
